How technology might provide an alternative, drug-free prescription for depression for people aged 50 and over
What is Depression?
Depression is characterised by a
“loss of pleasure or interest in activities for long periods”,
leading to problems such as a depressed mood, decreased appetite, fatigue and a feeling of worthlessness. People of all ages suffer from depression all over the world. However, its causes may differ between people of different ages because they are experiencing different things in life.
The three leading causes of depression amongst older people are social isolation, poor physical health and loss; this loss often refers to losing loved ones but can also be anything around them, such as losing the ability to partake in certain activities or having to move away from familiar places. With increasing age, news of health problems may also be a major trigger for depression.
CURRENT TREATMENTS
Treating depression in older patients using conventional medicine can be more challenging and hazardous due to its accessibility and the risk of side effects; these include heart palpitations, insomnia, memory issues and a myriad of physical health problems, which can be more serious in older people. Currently, it is recommended that you should take medication and psychotherapy in conjunction in order to have the best chance of success. Due to these problems, ESG Gaming aims to use technology to provide drug-free treatment to those who may not be able to take chemical medication or attend appointments.
HOW CAN VIDEO GAMES AND VIRTUAL TECHNOLOGY BE USED AS A TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION?
Studies indicate that virtual reality (VR), video games and improved technology are becoming more accessible as tools to treat depression, working in conjunction with conventional treatments, due to their accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Clinical trials in Oxfordshire have highlighted how technological advancements personalise treatments, minimising unnecessary chemical treatments which could lead to potentially harmful side effects.
VR especially allows social interaction in a simulated environment where patients can socialise in a safe, controlled, calming environment. Additionally, multiplayer games foster social connections, helping to alleviate loneliness, a major depressive factor; without the need for physical attendance in group settings, this is also far more accessible to those unable to travel to social therapy, and as such, should replace such treatments, especially for those who would not be able to travel. Such improvements enhance conventional treatment as well as increase its accessibility, reducing logical barriers and constant treatment costs.
